Our first hike of 2023 will be in the Cerrillos Hills State Park. Go south on Highway 14. Turn right to the village of Cerrillos. Turn right at the stop sign, cross the railroad tracks and veer to the right. Follow the signs to Cerrillos Hills State Park, Highway 96. Park at the main entrance, The park has scenic views of the surrounding mountains and it is riddled with historic mines. We will hike 3 miles, discuss the history of mining in the area, and be on the trail for about two hours. Difficulty: moderate, trails are in good condition, some steep sections, loose rocks in places, a few steep downward stone steps. If you would to go to lunch at the Mine Shaft Tavern in Madrid, email JimAnhalt@gmail.com when you register for the hike. I must give a head count to the Mine Shaft.
There is a five dollar per car fee at the park, be sure to bring cash.
